Hammon steps up for Liberty

Associated Press

Becky Hammon is adjusting well to her new leadership role with the New York Liberty.

Hammon scored 10 of her 22 points in the final six minutes and the Liberty won their home opener, 68-62 against the Houston Comets on Sunday.

“I helped our team down the stretch,” Hammon said. “It was me tonight but it will be someone else another night. The point guard position takes a natural leadership role, so being a leader is something that I have to do every day.”

Hammon switched to the point this season in place of Teresa Weatherspoon, who signed with the Los Angeles Sparks in the off-season after seven years in New York.

Tina Thompson had a career-high 35 points and eight rebounds, setting a WNBA single-game record by scoring 56.5 percent of her team’s points.

Mystics 68, Fever 67: At Indianapolis, Chamique Holdsclaw put back a missed shot with 10.7 seconds remaining, leading Washington past Indiana.

Holdsclaw had 17 points.
