‘Scary’ selection on home video

Dan Webster and Tom Bowers The Spokesman-Review

Scary Movie 3

•••

OK, I’m a sucker for stupid humor. And with David (“Airplane!”) Zucker directing a script by Shawn and Marlon Wayans, who continue the franchise created by older brother Keenen Ivory Wayans in 2000, that’s exactly what you get. The movie is a spoof of “The Ring,” “The Sixth Sense,” the “Scream” films, “Signs,” “The Matrix” and, of all things, “8 Mile.” It doesn’t break any new ground, and some of the jokes fall flat (I just didn’t get the “8 Mile” references, and can’t we just leave Michael Jackson alone?). But the stupidity just keeps coming, so much so that it’s likely to wear you down. Or not. (DVD, VHS; 1:20)

Rated PG-13 (pervasive crude and sexual humor, language, comic violence, drug references).

The Fog of War

Errol Morris won his first Oscar for this documentary study of Robert S. McNamara, secretary of defense under John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson and the so-called “architect” of the Vietnam War. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone said, “It will knock you for a loop like no other movie this year.” (DVD, VHS; 1:35)

Rated PG-13 (images, thematic issues of war and destruction).

In America

Director Jim Sheridan (“My Left Foot,” “In the Name of the Father”) shows the trials and tribulations of a family of Irish immigrants living in the United States. Sheridan co-wrote the film with his daughters, Naomi and Kirsten. “‘In America’ is likely to pierce the defenses of all but the most dogmatically cynical viewers,” said New York Times critic A.O. Scott. (DVD, VHS; 1:47)

Rated PG-13 (some sexuality, drug references, brief violence and language).

Japanese Story

A Japanese businessman named Tachibana (Gotaro Tsunashima) and Sandy (Toni Collette) – the expert geologist overlooking his father’s mine – establish a close connection after getting lost together in the Australian desert. “This is the rare sort of film that is not about what happens, but about what happens then,” said Chicago Sun-Times critic Roger Ebert. (DVD, VHS; 1:20)

Rated R (some sexuality and language).

The Jetsons: The Complete First Season

George, Jane, Judy, Elroy, Cosmo and Rosie the Robot are back in this 4-disc DVD set of the 1960s-era futuristic answer to “The Flinstones.” (DVD; 10:29)

Not rated.
