How would you spend your $100?

The Spokesman-Review

Say you had $100 to spend on city government. What would you do with the money? Would you spend more for a healthy environment or for safety?

Spokane city officials want to know.

They are asking city residents to fill out a form that allocates $100 among eight basic priorities of government and tell them how much of that $100 should go to each of the priorities. The form is available on the city Web site at www.spokanecity.org and at community centers, libraries and City Hall.

Here are the priorities:

•Growth and learning. Examples are libraries, recreation programs, cultural programs.

•Healthy citizens. Examples are water, trash collection, health programs.

•Healthy environment. Examples are sewers, park maintenance, environmental planning.

•Leadership. Examples are mayor and council, internal support services, neighborhood councils.

•Mobility. Examples are streets, traffic signals, bike trails.

•Reduced vulnerability. Examples are homeless assistance, low income housing, job training.

•Safety. Examples are police, fire, domestic violence prevention.

•Strong economy. Examples are zoning, business licenses and permits, tourism promotion.
