Foam and Home Fashions offers fabrics for furniture, drapes

A new store is tapping into the home improvement market by carrying a huge selection of upholstery fabrics and supplies that breathe new life into worn furniture and nondescript windows.

Foam and Home Fashions opened last week with products for both professional upholsters and novices who want a fresh look at a bargain price.

The store sells material for furniture and drapes and special vinyl, velvet and woven fabric for the interiors of cars and boats.

Judd Wynn, who owns the store with his wife, Heather, said the store carries foams for multiple uses, including mattress pads for home and camping. Customers can purchase 2-inch thick memory foam that fits on top of mattresses, and at a fraction of the price for a memory foam mattress set, put together a very comfortable bed.

Clients can pick up custom-cut pieces of foam to slip into the zippered seat covers and pillow cases of sofas and chairs.

The fabric and upholstery business is old hat to Judd Wynn, whose parents own Wynn’s Mill End Fabric, a Boise-based company with half a dozen stores throughout the region.

“I kind of grew up in the business ,and I’ve been working with them for the last eight years.”

The shop has wholesale quantities and prices for professionals and discount fabrics for do-it-yourselfers. Upholstery fabrics start at $6 a yard and Wynn said even people who don’t do upholstery work can save by purchasing their own fabric and hiring a professional to do the nipping and tucking.

Foam and Home Fashions, at 14210 E. Sprague Ave., is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call 893-0800.

Tanning salon has Polynesian flair

A new tanning salon is offering a hutfull of ways to get bronzed.

Coconutz Tanning Spa, 13330 E. Sprague Ave., has several choices for tanning and a Polynesian theme that includes a reception desk that is a Tiki-style hut.

Traci Steenburgen said she and co-owner Kelly Campbell opened the salon in May after seven months of investigating spas in several different states.

“We get a lot of compliments because of the look of the salon,” Steenburgen said.

Options for tanning include four beds that have a combination of spectrum lighting and a fifth bed that filters out most UVB rays.

People who aren’t into rays can get an airbrushed tan or purchase cans of aerosol and apply their own tan. Airbrushing and aerosol tans last from five to seven days and are popular with people who are tanning for a particular event, like a wedding.

Steenburgen said the salon carries products made by Designer Skin, and a Synergy Tan lotion called Swanky Girl.

“A lot of products are high-end and have a lot of anti-aging and firming ingredients. Our beds are brand new, and we have top of the line products.”

Steenburgen said they hope to add an oxygen bar where people can breathe highly concentrated oxygen through tubes for 50 cents per minute.

The spa is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call 922-3480.
