Fern wins qualifier

Washington State University golfer David Fern of Mead qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship by winning a qualifier at Woodburn, Ore., on Wednesday.

Fern fired a 10-under-par 134 over two rounds over the Oregon Golf Association GC, the site of one of 55 qualifiers.

The championship will be held at the Winged Foot GC in Mamaroneck, N.Y., Aug. 16-22.

Previously, Eric Hastings of Mead qualified for the championships.

Basketball

Gonzaga University’s Adam Morrison scored 10 points in the United States’ 87-64 victory over Braziil in the FIBA Americas 20-and-under qualifying tournament being played in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The U.S. plays Puerto Rico today.
