Summer’s best can be preserved

If you want that peak-of-summer taste all year long, the experts at the Spokane County Extension office for Washington State University can teach you how.

The Food Safety Advisors will give demonstrations and answer questions about “Preserving Summer’s Bounty” on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 222 N. Havana St. on the lower level in rooms A and B. You may come and go anytime during the sessions.

Demonstrations will cover safe and healthy basics of canning and freezing and dehydration of foods, including making jams, jellies, pickles and relishes. Experts also can answer your questions on entering preserves in the Spokane Interstate Fair. Displays and publications will be available.

There will be door prizes and a raffle will be held for a gift basket.

For more information, please contact Sharon Perrigo at 535-2848.

Feast with the Farmers

The Kootenai County Farmers’ Market will host a “Feast with the Farmers” dinner later this summer for about 75 lucky marketgoers.

Now through the end of July anyone who spends $20 at any market booth will be entered into a drawing for the feast. (Spend another $20 at another booth and you’ll get another drawing entry.)

The dinner will be held Aug. 12. The meal will be prepared by professional caterers from food sold at the market. The Kootenai County Farmers’ market is open Wednesdays, 4 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Bake-Off bummer

I’m sorry to report that Pillsbury Bake-Off finalist Laurel Hatfield of Priest River, Idaho, was not the big winner in this year’s contest.

Hatfield was one of 100 finalists from across the country. She went to Hollywood late last month to whip up her Creamy Apple Puffs for the $1 million prize.

This year’s grand prize winner was Suzanne Conrad of Findlay, Ohio. She won first place in the 41st contest for her Oats ‘n Honey Granola Pie. Look inside today’s IN Food section for that winning recipe.

Cookbooks with the winning recipe and recipes from all the finalists can be found at supermarkets and newsstands, or ordered by mail. Readers should send a check or money order for $4.50 to: Pillsbury Classic Back Issues, P.O. Box 350, Mt. Morris, IL 61054-0350.
