Softball tournament planned for Saturday
The Wishing Star Foundation, Spokane Youth Sports Association, LifeCenter Northwest Organ Procurement Office and Northwest Lions Eye Bank will host the fourth annual Krista L. Baker Memorial Softball Tournament on Saturday at Dwight Merkle Field, Rowan and Assembly, north of Albi Stadium. The event promotes organ donations and raises money for youth softball scholarships.
The tournament features an all-day home run derby from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and $1 root beer floats.
Home Run Derby contestants (youth and adults) can win new bats donated by Kimmel Athletic. A $5 donation gives contestants 10 pitches. Points are earned based on where the softball is hit.
Otto the Spokane Indians Baseball team mascot will be there from 11 a.m. to noon.
Krista L. Baker, a Spokane native, died at age 20 in 2000, while awaiting a double lung transplant. Baker became a cornea donor, improving the sight of two young men in the state.
More than 85,000 people are awaiting transplants in this country, including 1,200 in our region. More than 60 percent will die waiting.
Information on organ donation will be available at the tournament.
