Six-run inning lifts Budd Bay to victory

Spencer Korus had three hits and drove in a pair of runs during a six-run seventh inning as Budd Bay Embroidery defeated Great Falls Electrics 7-1 during Saturday’s second day of the Senior American Legion Fourth of July baseball tournament, held at Rogers High School and Shadle Park High School’s Al K. Jackson Field.

In other games at Jackson Field, the Cannons beat Great Falls 5-3 despite being outhit 10-3 for the game; Idaho Falls and the Northstars played to a 2-2 eight-inning tie; Budd Bay scored a run in the second inning and made it stand up in a 1-0 win over the Bandits.

At Rogers, the Blue Devils scored six runs in the fourth inning and then held on for a 7-6 win over Puyallup; El Segundo took advantage of six Cannons errors for a 11-5 win; El Segundo topped Kalispell 8-3; and Kalispell nipped South Kitsap 1-0.

Surge rout Shadow

The Cascade Surge got two goals by Mauricio Chavez, two assists from Dana McGregor and a goal and an assist from Skelly Kellar en route to a 5-1 rout of the Spokane Shadow Friday night in Salem, Ore.

The Shadow were outshot 19-3 as Cascade won the first of two key matches between the top two teams in the Premier Development League’s Northwest Division.

The Surge (10-2, 30 points) hold a five-point edge over the Shadow (8-4-1, 25 points) for first place and have a game in hand.

The two teams will meet again July 16 at Joe Albi Stadium, although by that time the Surge could have wrapped up the title if the Shadow, losers of three of their last four, can’t get back on track.

Spokane heads to Abbotsford, British Columbia, today for a 5 p.m. kickoff.

Huskies eighth in Directors’ Cup

The University of Washington placed eighth in the Directors’ Cup, the annual ranking of the best collegiate programs in the country by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.

The Huskies totaled 9,196 1/2 points, bolstered by a strong showing by their spring teams. For the year, Washington had seven teams finish among the top 10 in national competitions.

Stanford totaled 1,337 1/4 points to win the Directors’ Cup for the 10th consecutive year. Other Pacific-10 Conference teams among the top 10 were third-place UCLA and ninth-place California.

Washington State placed 108th, the lowest showing among Pac-10 teams.
