Local women’s team represents PNW at USTA nationals

The Coeur d’Alene-Spokane United States Tennis Association (USTA) senior women’s 4.0 team was undefeated in playoffs at the Pacific Northwest Sectional Championships held on June 24-27 at Sunriver, Ore.

The team, beating Tualatin Hills, Ore. in the finals, now has advanced to the USTA Nationals on Oct. 28-31 at Tucson, Ariz., to represent the Pacific Northwest Section which represents Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and North Idaho.

Team members are Eileen Johnson (captain), Coeur d’Alene; Janet Owen, Coeur d’Alene; Lela Wilson, Coeur d’Alene; Jan Johnson, Coeur d’Alene; Ann Gillespie, Spokane; Kris vanBredakolff, Spokane; Nancy Slaughter, Spokane; and Rita Doran, Spokane.

All-Academic

The University of Idaho had 25 student-athletes named to the Big West Spring All-Conference Academic Teams.

•The Washington State women’s swim team earned the highest grade point average in the nation for the spring 2004 term in Division I.

The Cougars continued in their tradition of academic prowess with a team semester GPA of 3.66, placing them No. 1 in the Pac-10 Conference for the seventh consecutive year.

Administration

Washington State assistant athletics director Rod Commons has been named president of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Commons is currently in his 29th year as the sports information director at WSU and has been an assistant athletic director since 1981.

A 1966 graduate of Oregon State, Commons serves as the WSU athletic department’s primary liaison with external media and WSU News and Information Services. He is also the primary media contact for Cougar football.

As president of CoSIDA, Commons will oversee a national membership of approximately 2,000 sports information directors.

Coaching

Washington State University has named Kristen Stubbs as the new women’s assistant tennis coach.

Stubbs comes to the Palouse from Virginia Tech after serving one year as an assistant in Blacksburg, Va. She helped guide the Hokies to a 14-14 record and fourth place finish in the Big East during the 2003-2004 season. The Hilton Head, S.C., native earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Virginia Tech.

Stubbs was a four-year tennis letter winner at Virginia Tech and was ranked nationally in singles during her senior season. She set a school record with 81 career doubles victories.
