Derrick kept perspective
Thank you for the great articles about Merle Derrick, especially the picture in Saturday’s paper.
I knew Doc for a long time, as a sportswriter and as a Playfair customer, and I have seen that look many times. That’s him. I cut it out and framed it.
Unless you had the opportunity to have one of your children play in the games Doc covered, you can’t begin to realize how special he was. He kept high school sports in perspective, no Supermen, no goats, just teenagers playing high school sports.
He was the same way at Playfair, went about his business picking and betting his horses, never complaining when he lost, never bragging when he won.
Spokane sports lost a hero and so did I.
