Grocery Outlet, Blasingame 1 and 2 in Giants League

Beyond the first two teams in the Spokane Valley Baseball Giants League, nothing is for certain.

Grocery Outlet (North Pines) was still unbeaten and Blasingame Insurance remains second at 5-1. Behind them any of six teams are still in the hunt for playoff berths.

Blasingame (Centennial) won 17-5 over Valley Electric, but needed eight innings to avoid an upset by unbeaten Jim Frazier Pro Shop, scoring two runs in the bottom of the extra inning for a 12-11 triumph. A hit batsman forced in the winner.

Pitchers, including Ben Ward, no-hit Valley Electric and Cody Role scored four runs and drove in four. Brothers Barry and Jacob Yount combined for nine RBIs, Barry with two triples.

In the Midget League, White Elephant (University) improved its American Division record to 5-1 midway through the season with a 14-2 romp past Craftsman Homes (Pasadena). Michael Barth had two hits and led a strong defensive effort. Devon Thompson threw three shutout innings.

This year he’s also had a home run, Cody Bergland had a 5-for-6 week plus two more hits this past week, and Thomas Wakem and Scott Ducar have provided dominant pitching during the run.

The team is half a game behind 6-1 Spokane County Deputy Sheriff’s Association (East Farms). East Farms won twice last week, including 12-11 over third-place McDonald’s (Adams). Pitcher Eric Wageman tripled in two runs and Nick Baggarley was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs. Jacob Reynolds and Trevor Moles were 2-for-2 with three doubles and three RBIs combined in an 11-0 win over Wi-Fi Broadband.

Three teams chase National Division honors with a loss each. George Velis DDS has a half-game lead at 6-1. The team rallied over Sidelines 12-5 after pitcher Casey Mertens allowed no runs and no hits against them and fanned eight. Adam Jessup led the comeback with two hits and three RBIs.

In other games, Craftsman Homes’ Kyle Beckham hit a grand slam homer. Pepsi’s Travis Bonwey went 4-for-4 with a double and home run.

Dr. DeCounter DDS (Pasadena) defeated Merit Electric in a showdown between Pee Wee League American Division unbeatens. Dr. DeCounter and Conley’s Place in the National Division are both 7-0.

Pasadena’s Brandon Davis and Hunter Wells pitched and batted their team to the win over Merit. They combined to strike out 11 and allow two hits, and drove in a combined four runs, Davis with a triple.

Conley’s got a 3-for-3, 3-RBI effort from Andrew Melvin and Daymin Marrs had a clutch two-run hit against River City Pizza.

In other games, Pizza Hut’s Dustin Dach had five RBIs, including with a home run and triple, and struck out eight in one game. Cody Jewell had three hits, including a triple, and Bo Morse doubled and drove in three runs during two victories.

Custom Touch Concrete’s Erick Campos struck out 14 batters and had four hits in two wins. Sterling Self Storage’s Tanner Williams went 5-for-5 with a home run, two triples and also threw three no-hit innings during a pair of games.

Leaders solidify softball hold

In a Valley Girls Softball showdown between 16-U League unbeatens, Conley’s took over undisputed first place with an 18-8 win over Burlington Northern. Also in the league Old Country Buffet’s Cassi Brown tripled with the bases loaded against Action Mortgage, Katie Cuzzetto tripled to back the pitching of Sarah Stetter against Kim Hotstart.

The 14-U League remains a log jam with four teams virtually tied for the top. Among them is 3-1 Old Country Buffet that beat Burling Northern 18-12. Kelly Troyer tripled and catcher McKenzie Cummersal threw two people out on the bases.

Three teams remain perfect in the 12-U League, including Action Mortgage which has won four straight games. Ashley Gilliland’s home run, plus defense and pitching by Kayla Steward and Jenna Gaskin led the team.

Also in league, Epivot’s Whitney Hawley threw out a runner stealing second in a win over Check Into Cash.

Unbeaten 10-U League leaders are McDonalds at 4-0, Arby’s and Bank of Fairfield.
