Five years ago: Russian President Boris Yeltsin and his chief political rival, parliament speaker Ruslan Khasbulatov, claimed victory after surviving attempts by the Russian Congress to oust them. About 10,000 people marched in Dublin, Ireland, to protest an IRA bombing that killed two young boys.

One year ago: A medical examiner revealed that some members of the Heaven’s Gate cult who’d committed suicide in California had also been castrated in pursuit of the group’s ideal of androgynous immortality.
