Whits Make Willamette 39th Victim

Ben Heimerman scored 20 points and pulled in 10 rebounds and Jeff Mix chipped in with 14 points as the NAIA Division II eighth-ranked Whitworth men’s basketball team downed Willamette 74-61 Friday night at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

It was the Pirates’ (12-4, 8-2 Northwest Conference) 39th straight win at home and earnd them a first-place tie with tonight’s home opponent, No. 22 George Fox (10-6, 8-2). George Fox lost to Whitman Friday night 90-77.

“They (Whitworth) should make their reservation for the national tournament now,” said Willamette coach Gordie James.

Whitworth trailed early 20-17, but a 3-pointer by reserve guard Sean Weston with 9:06 left in the first half gave the Pirates a 20-22 lead.

Willamette dropped to 9-7, 5-5.
