Cda Knocks Cheney Out Of Share Of 1st Place

Pat Stiffler tried to keep Cheney atop the Border League boys basketball stand ings, but Coeur d’Alene held on to win 75-71 in overtime Friday night.

Coming in, the teams were tied atop the league standings with 10-2 records.

With a little more than 5 seconds remaining in regulation, and Cheney trailing by three, Stiffler knocked down a 3-pointer from the top of the key to knot the game at 61.

Coeur d’Alene started the overtime period pounding the ball inside, with Casey Hoorelbeke scoring six early points as the Vikings took a 69-62 lead.

The ninth-ranked Blackhawks responded with baskets from Darian Ervin and Stiffler to cut the Vikings’ lead to three. But CdA’s Jim Rupp hit four free throws to put the game on ice.

Stiffler finished with 26 points and eight assists.

Coeur d’Alene dominated the paint, going to its big men, Hoorelbeke and Lukas O’Dowd. Hoorelbeke finished with a game-high 30 points. O’Dowd had 12, 10 of which came in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Coeur d’Alene used an 18-1 run in the third to lead 43-38 going into the fourth quarter. But Cheney hit clutch baskets to keep it close enough for Stiffler to hit the buzzer-beater and send it to overtime.

The Vikings (13-2, 11-2) took sole possession of first in the Border League. Cheney is 13-4 and 10-3.

Eric Deno scored 11 of West Valley’s first 13 points to help the Eagles (8-6, 6-6 Border League) defeat the Trojans (9-7, 6-6) at West Valley.

Deno finished with a game-high 22 points.

Andrew Burgess caught fire for the Knights, scoring 47 points, as East Valley won its first league game, defeating the visiting Bulldogs (5-11, 2-10).

Burgess made 14 of 29 from the field and 15 of 20 from the foul line. The Knights improved to 2-13, 1-10.
