Curlew Keeps Perfect Record Intact

Area boys

Defense ruled as second-ranked Curlew won a meeting between Panorama League divisional leaders at Ione Friday.

The Cougars (11-0, 7-0) held Selkirk to 28 percent shooting from the floor, including 1 of 17 from 3-point range, during a 58-42 win.

Selkirk (9-2, 6-1) slowed the high-scoring Cougars, who entered with four players averaging in double figures and a fifth (Erich Prazak) nursing an injured shoulder.

Russell Lopes and Jim Huffine had eight rebounds apiece for Selkirk.

Rhett Soliday’s jumper near the free-throw line with 11 seconds left allowed the visiting Indians (6-4) to knock off the 2A 10th-ranked Cardinals (4-3) in a non-leaguer for their fifth consecutive win.

ML tied the score at 43 with 45 seconds left on Jeff Nichols’ layin. Reardan soon missed two free throws, but the Cardinals responded with a turnover.

ML’s Brandon Moore had 16 rebounds and scored 20 on 8-for-16 shooting from the field.
