Jazz Call Off Seikaly Deal
The Utah Jazz voided their trade for Rony Seikaly on Wednesday after the Orlando center failed to report within the required 48-hour deadline.
Seikaly, traded by the Magic for Greg Foster, Chris Morris and Utah’s 1998 first-round draft pick on Monday, refused to report to the Jazz unless the team restored his contract to its original form.
Seikaly apparently wanted the Jazz to guarantee the next two years of his contract, worth $8.5 million. Seikaly waived those guaranteed years at Orlando’s request so he could join the Magic at the start of last season.
Scott Layden, Utah’s vice president of basketball operations, announced that the team was nullifying the deal during the fourth quarter of the Utah-New York game.
Karl Malone scored 25 points and Adam Keefe and Shandon Anderson each added 13 as the Jazz, playing without Seikley and the two players swapped for him, beat the Knicks 94-78.
Raptors, Celtics swap seven
Kenny Anderson got his wish - a ticket out of town - when the Raptors unloaded him in a seven-player trade with the Boston Celtics.
Anderson was acquired by Toronto in a major trade last week that sent point guard Damon Stoudamire to Portland. But Anderson refused to report to the Raptors, a franchise troubled by front-office instability and an 11-40 record.
Toronto received guards Chauncey Billups and Dee Brown and forwards John Thomas and Roy Rogers from the Celtics. Toronto sent center Zan Tabak and forward Popeye Jones to Boston.
The Vancouver Grizzlies made two trades in one hour, sending Otis Thorpe to the Sacramento Kings for Bobby Hurley in the second deal.
Earlier, the Grizzlies dealt Anthony Peeler to Minnesota for Doug West, the Timberwolves’ career scoring leader.
