Northwest Seed And Pet Spreads East To Sullivan And Sprague

Construction of a new Northwest Seed and Pet store is under way immediately east of Huckleberry’s Fresh Market at the corner of Sullivan and Sprague.

The 20,000-square foot store will open sometime in March, said Dave Tefft, assistant manager at the Northwest Seed and Pet store at 2422 E. Sprague. Tefft will be the manager at the new store.

Last summer, the company closed its store at University City Shopping Center.

The new store, which will feature a 16-foot atrium across the front of the building housing a koi pond and a greenhouse, will have about 30 employees, Tefft said. Unlike the U-City store, which was only a pet store, the new store will also have a garden center.

Northwest Seed and Pet presently has two Spokane stores: at Sprague and Altamont and at 7302 N. Division.

Credit union to open building in mid-April

The Spokane Railway Credit Union plans to open its new building on the southeast corner of Sullivan and Broadway in mid-April.

That means the credit union will be vacating its quarters in the Sullivan Square shopping center sometime in early April, said Doreen Kelsey, vice president of marketing for the credit union.

The credit union is moving because its lease at Sullivan Square was up and it had outgrown the 3,000-square foot space there.

“With the level of business from that location, we needed a free-standing building,” Kelsey said.

The new one-story, 5,700-square foot building will have an 24-hour automatic teller machine and three drive-through lanes. It will be staffed by between six and 10 employees, she said.

Spokane Railway Credit Union has 39,000 members and six branches in the Spokane-Coeur d’Alene area. It has $230 million in assets.

Card store plans April opening

A 50% Off Cards store is expected to open by April 1 in the former Smith’s Home Furnishing building at Sprague and Sullivan.

The store will occupy 12,000 square feet on the west side of the building, said Ellsworth Moland, president of Moland Greeting Card Co. and owner of five 50% Off Cards stores in Spokane.

“It’s still location, location, location,” Moland said, describing why he plans to open a shop in the Smith’s building. The card shop will be one of three tenants occupying the 45,000-square foot former furniture store.

Negotiations are under way with two other possible tenants, said Randy Jassman, a real estate agent with Tomlinson-Black Commercial.

The store will carry 6,000 to 7,000 cards, party and gift items and Mylar balloons. It will have 12 to 14 employees, he said.

The Smith’s Home Furnishing store has been empty since the chain filed for bankruptcy in 1995.
