Fund Drive Under Way For Ymca Money Will Help Disadvantaged Youths Take Part In Programs

The YMCA kicked off a fund-raising campaign on Tuesday in hopes of raising $141,150 for disadvantaged youths.

The campaign, which will end March 20, will fund the YMCA’s scholarship program for youth sports, summer camp and swimming lessons.

“It’s giving a gift to a child who otherwise wouldn’t be able to take advantage of a Y program,” said campaign director Hank Keaton, who also is president of Medical Service Corporation of Eastern Washington.

“When people understand it’s scholarship money, it makes it a whole lot easier to give.”

In addition, some proceeds will go to the YMCA’s Retired and Senior Program, which pairs nonprofit agencies with retired people willing to volunteer.

The campaign already has raised $17,000 from corporations and individuals pledging at least $1,000 each.

A similar drive last year raised $130,000 and funded scholarships for 4,000 kids. Organizers hope to pay for 4,500 scholarships this year.

Scholarships are available for activities at the five YMCA branches, including Camp Reed.

During the campaign, more than 100 volunteers will be soliciting donations from individuals and companies. Volunteers will get a free ticket to the Shrine Circus at the end of the campaign.
