Kenya’s Elijah Lagat won the Berlin Marathon with the year’s fastest time - 2 hours, 7 minutes, 41 seconds. Catherina McKiernan of Ireland set a women’s course record of 2:23:44 in her Berlin debut.

Swiss cyclist Alex Zulle, 29, won his second consecutive Tour of Spain in Madrid, capturing the 22-day race by 5 minutes, 7 seconds over Fernando Escartin of Spain.

Paul Henderson, the hero of Canada’s 1972 Summit Series hockey triumph over the Soviet Union, scored to help the Reds beat the Whites 4-1 in a reunion game at Toronto in a benefit for the Special Olympics.

Deputy Commander, with Chris McCarron aboard, led most of the way and held off a challenge by pre-race favorite Free House to win the Super Derby at Louisiana Downs in Bossier City. Precocity was second and Blazing Sword third among the six colts that competed in the 1-1/4 mile Grade I race for 3-year-olds.
