Ccs Weathers Storm, Shines Against No. 4 Team

Neither Hurricane Nora nor Johnson County Community College could keep Kelly Tifft, who scored two goals, and his Community Colleges of Spokane teammates from posting a major upset, a 2-1 victory over Johnson County, Kan., at a tournament in Prescott, Ariz. Johnson County is ranked fourth in the nation.

The remnants of the Pacific Ocean hurricane hampered travel, as the Sasquatch team arrived 15 minutes before the start, not even taking the time to check into their hotel.

CCS plays for the championship tonight at 8:30 against Yavapai Community College from Prescott, ranked second in the nation.

High-scoring Jeff McAllister scored twice to lead Gonzaga past Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 3-1 in a non-league men’s soccer match at San Luis Obispo, Calif.

McAllister raised his season total to 13 goals and the Bulldogs (7-2), relentless on offense, out-shot the Mustangs (3-6) 19-7.

College women’s soccer

Playing short-handed after a player was ejected for fighting, Montana scored four goals in the second half to defeat Washington State 4-0 in a non-league match at Missoula.

Senior midfielder Courtney Mathieson scored once and added two assists for Montana (4-4).

The Cougars (2-4) play Air Force (4-4) today.

Volleyball

Idaho defeated Nevada 15-5, 15-9, 15-10 Friday in a Big West Conference volleyball match in Reno, giving first-year Vandals coach Carl Ferreira a victory in his conference debut.

Idaho (7-6 overall, 1-0 Big West) won its fourth consecutive match while dropping Nevada to 6-9 overall and 0-1 in conference.

Willamette (2-7) defeated Whitworth (1-8) 15-11, 15-10, 15-6 in a NCIC match in Spokane.

Lindsay Hunter had 12 kills and Mary Hubele 18 digs and 22 assists for the Pirates.

CCS won one of four matches at the Valley of the Sun Tournament in Phoenix.

The Sasquatch defeated Yavapai 15-11, 15-11 and lost to Pima 15-13, 15-11, Scottsdale 15-10, 16-14 and Phoenix 15-12, 16-14.

Softball

Sullivan Scoreboard Tavern of Spokane won two games in the Amateur Softball Association men’s national B slowpitch tournament in Hastings, Neb.

Scoreboard scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Stoneys of Allentown, Pa., 15-14.

Also, Scoreboard defeated Duck City of Mundelein, Ill., 19-16.
