Chiefs Down Thunderbirds, 3-1

Derek Schutz, Brandin Cote and Mark Forth scored Sunday as the Spokane Chiefs concluded their exhibition season with a 3-1 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds in the Tri-City Americans Exhibition Tournament at Kennewick.

Aren Miller played in goal for Spokane, stopping 30 shots.

The Chiefs open their Western Hockey League season Saturday, facing Tri-City at 7 p.m.

Motorsports

Greg Biffle, driving the Kalico Kitchen’s Chevrolet for Ron Hall of Spokane, took the lead on lap 42 and held on for the next 98 circuits to claim his first NASCAR Northwest Tour victory in the NAPA 150 Saturday night at Magic Valley Speedway in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Kelly Tanner, the 1997 NWT champion was second and Rick Schultz of Spokane third in the final race of the season.

Wenatchee’s Kim Wennerberg won the final race of the Interstate Superstock Series Saturday at Stateline Speedway.

The 1996 champion, Puyallup’s Mike Sauls, was third and new champion Jay Ulmer was third. The highest Spokane-area finishers were Rick Kellogg (5th), Brad Allard (6th) and L.T. Jones (7th).

Also at Stateline, Tony Berg put an end to Allen Swain’s nine-race win streak, taking the season’s final race in the Northwest Mini-Supers.

Mark Owens of Libby, Montana won Sunday’s 100-lap, late-model feature at Spokane Raceway Park.

Marc Groskreutz of Spokane charged from the back of the field to finish third in Saturday’s NASCAR Southwest Tour race at Tucson, Ariz.
