Award Was A Bust
San Francisco school officials have refused a $5,000 award given by the Playboy Foundation to the student newspaper at Mission High School, saying that taking the money didn’t mesh with the school district’s mission. The Playboy Foundation lauded the student newspaper, the West Wing, for stories on the replacement of three top administrators and an investigation into why basketball players were receiving expensive high-top shoes. “We believe that to accept an award, no matter how well-intentioned, from a foundation which represents an adult magazine … would represent a tacit endorsement,” two San Francisco Unified School District associate superintendents wrote in a letter thanking the Chicago-based foundation for recognizing the quality of the West Wing.
