Legal Profession Invited To Red Mass

Nina Culver Correspondent

All members of the legal community are invited to attend the Red Mass at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church at 5 p.m. Tuesday on the Gonzaga University campus.

The term Red Mass is from 14th-century England, when judges and priests wore red robes to an annual Mass in Westminster to mark the beginning of the fall term of the King’s Bench.

The Most Rev. William Skylstad, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Spokane, will preside over Tuesday’s Mass. The homily will be delivered by the Rev. Walter Burghardt, a senior fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center in Washington, D.C.

Following the Mass, the 1997 Distinguished Judicial Awards will be presented to retired Washington Court of Appeals Judges Benjamin McInturff, a 1952 GU Law School graduate, and Philip Thompson, a 1962 graduate. Thompson will become GU’s corporation counsel in mid-October.

A reception will follow at 6 p.m. in Cataldo Hall.

For more information, call 328-4220, ext. 3605.

GU miniconference planned

Sister Francis Clare, a world-renowned author and lecturer, will lead a two-day miniconference next week at Gonzaga University.

“Jesus Christ: Priest, Prophet and King” will begin with worship at 7 p.m. Friday, with all-day sessions on Saturday and ending with a healing service.

Sister Clare’s books, including “Wow God,” “Your Move, God,” “We the Bride” and “Glory to Glory,” have been translated into five languages. She has addressed national and international conferences since 1970.

For more information, call 276-2152 or 276-6165.

Walk and pray

The focus of a prayer walk in Spokane’s West First district next week will be to “pray for the release of the spirit of God in the area,” said John Knight, organizer.

Everyone is invited to participate in “Praying On-site with Insight,” beginning at 6:30 p.m. at City Gate Fellowship, 114 S. Madison.

For more information, call 327-0141.

Block party will be today

Driscoll Boulevard Baptist Church, 4815 N. Driscoll Blvd., will host a block party from 4:30 to 6:30 this afternoon for members and neighbors to get acquainted.

There will be free food, a petting zoo and drawings for prizes. A fire truck will be there for inspection, and McGruff the Crime Dog will make an appearance.

All members of the community are invited to attend.

A new church begins

Summit Ridge Foursquare Church will conduct its first services on Sunday.

Formed by members of the New Life Foursquare Church, the new church will hold weekly services at 9 and 11 a.m. at the South Hill Seventh-day Adventist Church, 5607 S. Freya.

Organist retiring

After 30 years of playing the organ at First Presbyterian Church, Jan Whaley has announced her retirement, and a reception in her honor will be at 7 p.m. Sunday in the church fellowship hall, 318 S. Cedar.

During her three decades on the organ bench, Whaley has played under the tenure of five head pastors.
