Bears Get Better Of Bullpups, 3-1
Central Valley notched the biggest upset of the young Greater Spokane League volleyball season, defeating Gonzaga Prep 15-9, 2-15, 15-9, 15-10 Tuesday at G-Prep.
Rikki Jackson led the Bears (1-3) with 13 kills and two blocks.
Senior setter Rose Sacco totaled 19 assists, seven digs and seven aces for the Bullpups (2-2).
Also in the GSL, Ferris (5-0) and Mead (4-0) continued to plow ahead with sweeps. Neither team has dropped a game in GSL matches. Ferris plays at Mead Friday night.
Missy Blackshire’s 15 kills and Janelle Morrisette’s 29 assists guided Ferris to a 15-11, 15-4, 15-6 decision over visiting Rogers (3-2).
Amy George added seven digs and three aces for the Saxons. Molly Abrahamson of the Pirates totaled 10 blocks and six kills.
At Mead, Kortney Stewart’s 10 kills, seven digs and two blocks guided the Panthers to a 15-9, 15-5, 15-5 win over University. Allison Fryer of the Titans (0-4) had eight digs and four blocks.
Shadle Park and Lewis and Clark moved into a tie for third place at 3-1, with Shadle topping visiting North Central 15-11, 15-12, 17-15 and LC taking a 15-1, 15-0, 15-8 win at Mt. Spokane.
Michelle Etter had 21 kills and nine blocks, and Heather Hertz served three consecutive aces to end the match in Shadle’s win. Angie Demrose of the Indians (1-4) had 11 kills, 11 digs and eight blocks.
Katie Querna’s five aces and four digs helped LC over the Wildcats (0-5). Mt. Spokane’s Anna Konis had five digs.
Carey Sauer’s 12 digs and nine kills guided Newport (2-0) to a 15-10, 15-7, 15-4 Great Northern League win over visiting Lakeside (1-1).
Lakeside’s Nikki Petticrew had 10 digs and four kills.
Also in the league, Melissa Wollan’s six kills and six aces helped visiting Colville (2-0) to a 15-2, 15-3, 15-4 win over Riverside at Chattaroy.
Riverside’s Sarah Lebahn had seven digs and three blocks.
Christa Brossman had nine kills and five digs as visiting Pullman (1-1) topped Deer Park 15-10, 12-15, 15-9, 15-10.
Gina Bendowski also had nine kills for the Stags, who won the second game after trailing 9-1.
Amanda Monroe had 14 kills, and Amy Green and Amanda Higgins added 11 digs apiece as Medical Lake (1-1) topped visiting Chewelah 11-15, 15-8, 15-11, 15-13. Shannon Edwards of the Cougars (1-1) had 15 assists.
Girls soccer
Fourth-year player Javanna Howard, a defender in the past, scored a pair of first-half goals to help Medical Lake (0-1-1) to a 2-all tie with visiting Colville (1-0-1) in the Great Northern League.
Howard’s first goal, midway through the half, came off a free kick from near midfield.
Also in the league, Kelly Pritchard’s two goals and two assists guided Pullman (1-0-0) to an 8-0 win over visiting Chewelah (0-2-0).
Michaela Mirkovich added one goal and three assists, and Jessica Neill a pair of first-half goals for the Greyhounds.
At Nine Mile Falls, visiting Deer Park (0-1-1) scored twice in the second half to tie Lakeside at 2. Candice Denigan scored the first goal for the Eagles (1-0-1).
