Campaign ‘97

Campaign '97 Is Compiled By Staf

Nether-watch

Technically, this could be considered part of Campaign ‘98, but it happened last week, so here goes. As Rep. George Nethercutt continues to ponder whether he should try to become Sen. Nethercutt, he’s getting advice from the other side of Capitol Hill. Specifically, from Majority Leader Trent Lott of Mississippi, who reportedly offered some advice during a meeting on Wednesday … Nethercutt described the discussion as positive and encouraging, but apparently not so much that he’s set up his timetable for making the decision … That’s still generally scheduled for sometime this month, whenever he gets back for a weekend break in the midst of the upcoming votes on the nation’s spending bills.

Since we’re looking ahead

With the caution that presidential polls three years before the election are as valid as tea leaves, we pass along some results from the newspaper’s pollster, Mason-Dixon Political/Media Research: If the next presidential race were being held now, Colin Powell would have the best shot if he were to run. Nearly three-fourths of the 1,123 voters polled across the nation said they had a favorable opinion of him, and he would handily beat Vice President Al Gore in a head-to-head match up … About half the people polled had a favorable opinion of Gore, Texas Gov. George W. Bush and former HUD Secretary Jack Kemp. Those two Republicans topped a Powell-less GOP field, and Gore edged both in hypothetical matchups.

Because you asked

Several readers called to ask how to contact the group that is circulating petitions to reconsider the Lincoln Street Bridge Project. Friends of the Falls can be contacted at 2028 S. Adams, Spokane 99203, or at 838-5803.

Web sites of the week

The friends and foes of Initiative 676, the proposed gun safety law, are trading fire on the Internet. You can check out the arguments of the “yeas” at www.676.org/, and compare them with the ammunition offered by the “nays” at www.halcyon.com/claw/ defeat676.html.

Last week’s Web site address was missing a letter. Find the Secretary of State’s voter guide at www.wa.gov/sec/vote97.htm
