For the first 20 minutes, Stanford made a game of it with top-ranked Tennessee. In the final 20 minutes, it was no contest.

Chamique Holdsclaw scored 25 points and Tamika Catchings 20 as Tennessee pulled away in the second half Saturday to send No. 11 Stanford to its first home loss in more than three years, 88-70.

Semeka Randall added 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Vols (5-0), whose victory snapped a 49-game home winning streak for the Cardinal (1-3), off to their worst start since 1981-82, when Stanford also began 1-3.

“I knew that our players had the ability to play one-on-one defense like they did in the second half, but not to the extent of holding Stanford to 25 points,” said Tennessee coach Pat Summitt. “I’m pleased we could go on the road with this young team and do this well. Right now, our team is better than I thought it would be.”

The game, played at the San Jose Arena, a few miles from Stanford’s Maples Pavilion, was considered a home game because of its proximity to the campus near Palo Alto.

Olympia Scott led Stanford with 18 points, and Vanessa Nygaard had 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Stanford, which had the longest active home-winning streak in women’s Division I basketball before Saturday’s defeat, lost its first home game since Purdue won 82-65 in an NCAA West Regional final at Maples on March 26, 1994.
