Catalog Spoofs Smith & Hawken

Adrian Higgins The Washington Post

Smith & Hawken has built an empire supplying yuppie gardeners with the latest landscape accoutrements. But a wooden loam rake 16 feet wide, gardening trousers with 42 pockets or a bird feeder that electrocutes squirrels? You’ll only find those in the Smyth & Hawk’em catalog, a parody by Tom Connor and Jim Downey ($10, HarperPerennial).

Other bargains in the 64-page mock catalog: a huge copper pot in which to hide and meditate, $3,999; and a plant press the size of a table to preserve whole shrubs, $225.

The real Smith & Hawken finds the spoof amusing, said a spokeswoman, and may stock the book in its 24 stores nationwide.
