Ferris E Golf Title; Holt One Back

Walla Walla’s Lindsay Morgan shot a 2-over-par 76 to hold a one stroke lead over defending champion Britney Holt of Mead after Tuesday’s opening round in the girls State AAA golf championships at Yakima Elks Golf Course.

Today’s final round is at Yakima’s Appletree Golf Course.

Ferris’ Laura Hicks and Lewis and Clark’s Tricia Bassett were in a group of three tied for fourth at 81. Another stroke back were Mead’s Sara Northcutt and Ferris’ Hillary Prugh.

Ferris and Bellarmine Prep advanced four to today’s final round, with Ferris holding the edge on winning the state title. Bridget Johnson (84) and Jaime Seefried (87) also advanced for the Saxons.

Four players were tied for the lead at even-par 72 after the opening round of the boys State AAA at Yakima’s Appletree Golf Course.

Kentwood’s Mark Hansen, Newport-Bellevue’s Mike Haack, Federal Way’s Sean Nuzzo and Thomas Jefferson’s Aaron Kerth have the lead entering today’s final round.

Charlie Napp of Rogers (Spokane) joined a group of six tied for seventh at 74.

Other Greater Spokane League competitors who made the cut (80) were Robert Selland, Shadle Park, 75; Ryan Camp, Ferris, 76; Dan Potter, Gonzaga Prep, 78; Keith Ross, Mead, 78; and Jeremy Lust, University, 79.

GSL district champ Brian Fong of Mead shot an 82, as did district runner-up, Ferris’ Michael Hastings.

Vashon’s Krissy Rojecki shot a 4-over 77 to take a four-shot lead after the opening day of the girls State A/B at Downriver.

Toutle Lake’s Erin Peck shot an 81, one stroke better than Ritzville’s Emily Ulleland. Ritzville has four competitors in the top 16.

Liberty’s Erica Leslie, in fourth place, shot an 86. The tourney concludes today at Downriver.

No results were reported from the boys State A/B at Hangman Valley Golf Course. The tourney ends today.

Lynden’s Josh Woodcock shot a 2-over 73 to take the first-round lead in the boys State AA at Lake Spanaway Golf Course.

Clarkston’s Doug McClure, with a 77, Pullman’s Ryan Ressa (79), East Valley’s Brian Miacolo (80) and Cheney’s Ben McLuen (81) made the cut, which was 81.

Sedro Woolley’s Kelli Kamimura, looking for a third straight win, shot a 1-under 72 for the first-round lead in the girls State AA at Tacoma’s Meadow Park Golf Course.

Kamimura has a three-shot lead over her freshman sister, Jenny, and Burlington freshman Stephanie Linnell.

Pullman’s Jenny Dolph, with an 84, had the top score among Frontier League competitors. Other scores were Amy Wieber, West Valley, 86; Melanie Laroque, WV, 90; Becky Grecgain, Clarkston, 93; Brandy Davies, Pullman, 98; and Sara Niccolls, Cheney, 100.

District 7-AA/A softball

West Valley 4, Colville 2 (8)

Darcy Sohns struck out six and drove in the go-ahead run with a bloop single as the Eagles (19-2) beat the Indians (18-3) in the title game at Medical Lake.

Rachelle Watson led off WV’s eighth with a triple. Sohns singled, took second and scored on Haley Henry’s double.

Tarrah Brown struck out seven for the Indians, who scored both runs on errors.

WV qualified for state for the 10th time in 13 years. The Eagles open the State AA/A fastpitch tourney in Tacoma at noon Friday against District 2 No. 2. Colville draws District 1 No. 3 at 10 a.m.

East Valley 4, Cheney 0

No. 9 hitter Sara McIntyre went 3 for 3 with three RBIs as the Knights (17-6) eliminated the Blackhawks (9-13).

Rebecca Triplett struck out seven and walked none for EV, which opens state at noon Friday against District 5/6 No. 1.
