Frontier Entries Dominate District Softball

The Frontier League swept the Northeast A during District 7-AA/A fastpitch softball openers Wednesday at Medical Lake.

When the tourney resumes at 11 a.m. Saturday, West Valley (17-2) plays Cheney (8-11), and East Valley (14-5) meets Colville (17-2) for title-game berths and automatic state bids. Losers tackle the NEA’s Freeman (15-3) and Colfax (7-12) in the chase for the final state berth.

In openers, Rebecca Triplett threw a no-hitter, striking out 10 and walking none, as EV beat Kettle Falls 6-1.

WV topped Lakeside 8-2 as Rachelle Watson hit a three-run homer in the second and Kristy Alberts a solo shot in the sixth. Lakeside’s Nikki Petticrew hit a solo homer in the first.

Tarrah Brown and Melissa Wollan combined on a one-hitter, as Colville beat Colfax 12-0 in five innings. Brown struck out 10 of the 13 batters she faced.

Cheney began with a 5-3 win over Freeman, as Jessica Lasley doubled home two in the top of the eighth.

In loser-out games, Freeman beat Lakeside 8-2 as Brook Watson went 2 for 3 with three RBIs.

Sarah Austin had two RBIs, including a go-ahead single with two outs in the sixth, as Colfax nipped NEA regular-season champ KF 6-5.

Republic, the fourth seed from the Panorama League, won the District 7-B slowpitch tournament at Kettle Falls.

Republic began with a 10-1 win over Bi-County League tourney champ Reardan, topped Northport 4-1, then edged Bi-County regular-season champ Davenport 9-7 in the title game. Heather Davis and Felishia Pfaffle scored twice apiece against Reardan.

Republic is a No. 1 seed and Davenport No. 2 to the State B tourney May 30-31 at Franklin Park.

Panorama regular-season and tourney champ Springdale beat Northport 8-5 in the game for third and fourth state seeds.

Joey Cottrill went 3 for 4, including an RBI triple during a fourrun fourth, to lead Garfield-Palouse to a 7-6 win over Pomeroy in a District 9-B slowpitch winner-to-state, loser-out game at Palouse.

Nancy Sheffler went 3 for 3 with an RBI double for the Vikings. Gar-Pal meets Wednesday’s Rosalia/Touchet winner, date and site to be determined, for state seeds.

Girls golf

West Valley junior Melanie Laroque won the District 7-AA title with a 20-over-par 92 at Liberty Lake Golf Course.

Laroque shot 82 when the tourney opened May 13 at Colville. Her combined score of 174 beat Pullman sophomore Jenny Dolph by seven.

Also advancing to the State AA tourney, Monday and Tuesday in Tacoma, are Becky Grecgain, Clarkston; Amy Wieber, WV; Sara Niccolls, Cheney; Lindy Vance, Colville; and Brandy Davies, Pullman.

Monday’s tennis

WV’s Keli Heidenson in boys singles and Riverside’s Bernice Stime in girls singles are District 7-AA No. 1 seeds to the May 30-31 state tourney in Tacoma.

Also advancing are Ryan Monroe, Riverside, boys singles, and Sharon Wentz, East Valley, girls singles. Doubles qualify Friday in Pullman.
