Youngest Indy 500 Winner Dies

Compiled From Wire Services

Troy Ruttman, the youngest driver to win the Indianapolis 500, died Monday. He was 67.

Ruttman checked into Havasu Samaritan Regional Hospital four days ago. He was pronounced dead around 6 a.m., said nursing supervisor Carol Northam. The cause of death was not immediately known. Northam said Ruttman had been suffering from a lung ailment, but didn’t know if it was cancer.

Ruttman won the 1952 Indy 500 at age 22. Then he became the first Indy 500 winner to drive in a Formula One race - in Reims, France, in 1958.
