WSU’s Lee Jones Receives Social Responsibility Award

Lee Jones, director of the Office of Multicultural Student Services at Washington State University, received the President’s Social Responsibility Award from Kent State University.

Jones was cited for 10 years of advocating, advancing and supporting African Americans and other people of color in higher education. He provided leadership and vision for recruitment of students, faculty and staff.

He joined WSU last year.

Sally Cartwright Epp of Spokane and a graduate student at the University of Oklahoma, received the university’s Irma Rayne Tomberlin Scholarship. Epp was a National Merit Scholar in high school and is now a student in UO’s School of Library and Information Studies.

Jeremiah Hensley of Spokane County Fire District 10 and John Bibler III of Colfax Fire and Rescue graduated recently after completing an eight-week course at the Fire Training Academy of the State Patrol’s Fire Protection Bureau.

Several Inland Northwest students majoring in education at the University of Idaho fulfilled their student teaching requirements this semester. The students, listed alphabetically by their hometowns, their area of training, their parents and where they taught are:

Colfax: Bernie Brabant, business education, and son of Verle Brabant and Mavis Walker, Pullman High School.

Davenport: Kimberly Jantz, biology, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Jantz, East Valley High School.

Spokane: John Monroe, secondary education, Post Falls Junior High; and Jill Shepherd, elementary education, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Shepherd, McDonald Elementary School in Moscow, Idaho.

Linda Massey, professor of food science and human nutrition at Washington State University at Spokane, received the American Dietetic Association’s Outstanding Educator Award for Area 1, which is composed of eight Western states.
