Lawyer Wins Pac-10 Heptathlon
Stanford sophomore Tracye Lawyer earned a career-high score to win the heptathlon and California junior Ross Bomben won six of 10 events to claim the decathlon title during Sunday’s Pacific-10 Conference track and field championships at Husky Stadium in Seattle.
Lawyer, who placed sixth in last year’s heptathlon competition, built a 5,663-point total during the two-day event.
She posted a 316-point advantage over Oregon’s Jennifer Thomas who finished with 5,347 points. Lawyer had a 250-point lead after the first day.
Katrina Jackson of Stanford placed third with 5,023 points, followed by Washington State’s Heidi Shultz with 4,987 and Stanford’s Joy Goff with 4,931.
Bomben, who won the first two of Sunday’s events, amassed 7,551 points to win the decathlon.
Arizona’s Dominic Johnson came in second with 7,340 and California’s Bevan Hart was third with 7,258.
Defending Pac-10 decathlon champion Leo Slack of Washington State was injured and unable to defend his title.
College softball
At Norman, Okla., the Washington Huskies downed Oklahoma State 10-9 to win the regional softball finals leading up to the women’s College World Series.
For the second year in a row, the Huskies are headed for the College World Series, which starts Thursday.
Crew
Gonzaga finished second to Sacramento State in the women’s Varsity Four at the Pac-10 Rowing Championships at Sacramento.
The University of Washington dominated the regatta, winning the men’s Varsity Eight, the women’s Varsity Eight, the men’s Freshman Eight, the men’s JV Eight and the women’s Novice Eight.
The Washington State women finished fourth in the Varsity Eight, the Novice Eight and the Varsity Four. The Gonzaga women finished sixth in Varsity Eight and fifth in Novice Eight.
The Gonzaga men finished fifth in Varsity Eight, seventh in JV Eight and ninth in Freshman Eight.
