Stamps Pay Tribute To Coaches

Bloomberg News

Postage stamps honoring four legendary football coaches will be dedicated in July during the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s induction weekend.

Coaches Bear Bryant, George Halas, Vince Lombardi and Pop Warner will be honored on the stamps, which will be dedicated here July 25 on the steps of the Hall of Fame.

Hall-of-Famers Joe Namath, who played for Bryant at the University of Alabama; Bart Starr, who quarterbacked Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers to two Super Bowl victories; and Gale Sayers, who played his entire career under Halas with the Chicago Bears, will be at the dedication.

Warner won national championships coaching the University of Pittsburgh in 1916 and 1918, and another at Stanford in 1926. His career record was 319-106-32 with six college teams from 1896 to 1938.

The newest class of Hall-of-Fame enshrinees - Mike Haynes, Wellington Mara, Don Shula and Mike Webster - will be inducted on July 26, followed by the annual Hall of Fame Game between the Seattle Seahawks and Minnesota Vikings.
