Waller’s Timely Scores Win District For Cheney

Ryan Waller beat the clock twice Wednesday, giving Cheney the right to play host for the State AA boys soccer playoffs.

Waller scored with 2 minutes left in regulation to tie West Valley at 1, then clinched the District 7-AA championship with a goal 1 minute into the second overtime.

The 2-1 win gives the Blackhawks (14-1-1) home field Saturday for a 2 p.m. match against Eastmont, the No. 2 team from the Mid-Valley.

WV led through 78 minutes on Adam Roberts’ goal. WV (9-6-1) travels to Mid-Valley champ West Valley (Yakima) at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Derek Fountain took a no-hitter into the fifth, and Brian Munhall continued his hot hitting as the Saxons (11-6) beat the Bears (10-7) in a tiebreaker at Rogers to earn the second seed to the District 8-AAA tournament at Seafirst Stadium.

Fountain struck out three and walked none. Munhall, 3 for 4, is 12 for 17 with 11 runs batted in during his last four games.

Ferris has a district bye until 2 p.m. Saturday, when it plays for a regional berth. No. 3 CV opens at 1 p.m. Friday in a loser-out against No. 6 Shadle Park.

Coin flips Wednesday gave University the fourth seed to district, Gonzaga Prep No. 5 and Shadle No. 6. The three tied for fourth at 8-8. Just the Nos. 1, 2 and 6 spots are played off in the event of ties.

U-Hi and G-Prep play a loser-out district game at 3:45 Friday afternoon.

Chris Gagnon hit a three-run homer in the first, and Mike Miller had a pair of two-run doubles as the No. 6 and visiting Bulldogs (8-8) beat the No. 4 Cardinals (9-7) in a District 7-A loser-out game.

KF plays No. 2 Chewelah (10-4) at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lakeside in a loser-out game. The winner plays Lakeside (13-1) afterward for regional seeding.

Boys golf

District 8-AAA tournament

Mead’s Brian Fong shot a 4-over-par 76 to hold off Michael Hastings of Ferris during the second and final round at Hangman Valley Golf Course.

Coupled with the 3-under 69 he shot Monday at Indian Canyon Golf Course, Fong finished at 145, one stroke ahead of Hastings. Hastings, tied for eighth after one round, shot his second straight 73.

The top eight advance to the state tournament, May 28-29 at Yakima. Other qualifiers were Ryan Camp, Ferris; Dan Potter, G-Prep; Jeremy Lust, U-Hi; Keith Ross, Mead; Charlie Napp, Rogers; and Robert Selland, Shadle.

District 7-AA tournament

Pullman’s Ryan Ressa shot an even-par 72 at The Fairways to take a three-stroke lead over five after one round.

Bunched at 75 are B.J. McLuen and Skyler Rodolth, Cheney; Brandon Frisch, West Valley; Kent Perkins, Colville; and Doug McClure, Clarkston. Twenty-six qualified for the final round Monday at Clarkston Country Club. Colville and East Valley qualified five apiece.

Softball

Riverside 8, Clarkston 6

At Chattaroy, Lacey Darby went 4 for 4 with three RBIs as the Rams (2-14) beat the visiting Bantams (4-11) to snap a nine-game Frontier League losing streak.

Darby and Breanna Mueller doubled, and Jackie Hattenburg tripled during a four-run fifth. Clarkston is chasing Cheney (5-11) for fourth place, the final District 7-AA berth.
