Greenwell retires
Former Boston Red Sox left fielder Mike Greenwell retired from baseball after breaking his right foot playing for the Hanshin Tigers of the Japanese Central League, the Japan Times reported.
The 33-year-old Greenwell spent his entire 11-year major league career in Boston, much of it in left field, and has a .303 career average with 130 homers and 726 RBI.
Clearing the bases
Texas placed second baseman Mark McLemore on the 15-day disabled list. McLemore has a torn ligament in his right hand which has contributed to his .174 batting average. The Rangers will activate infielder Domingo Cedeno to replace McLemore on the roster today … Right-hander Juan Guzman, forced to leave Tuesday’s start after just 12 pitches, flew to Birmingham, Ala., to have his right shoulder examined by orthopedic specialist Dr. James Andrews. Andrews performed successful arthroscopic surgery Tuesday on right-hander Erik Hanson’s throwing shoulder.
