Davis bonus spurs apology
University of Idaho President Robert Hoover apologized to the state Board of Education for the “irresponsible manner” in which the school failed to disclose a $20,000 bonus paid to former head basketball coach Kermit Davis.
Hoover said he was responsible for the school’s clear violation of the board’s policy because all school activities after July 1 were on his watch.
The board approved a one-year, $75,000 contract for Davis a year ago and was surprised to learn last month that the school had agreed to pay the coach a $20,000 bonus.
“My promise to you in the future is that the University of Idaho will not be in violation of reporting the salary packages of coaches,” Hoover wrote in an April 18 letter to the board. It was released by the school Tuesday.
“We have begun the process of reviewing our processing and reporting procedures and will implement critical controls to ensure that we never have a similar problem, especially during a transition period in senior personnel such as we had last summer.”
Hoover said interim president Thomas Bell and Pete Liske, the athletic director at the time, negotiated the contract with Davis and his attorney, Craig Mosman of Moscow, in March 1996.
Davis left last month to become assistant head coach at Louisiana State University.

NIC intends to interview Whitworth head coach Rod Taylor, but is still trying to arrange a date.
The position will pay about $14,400 and currently doesn’t include a teaching position.

NIC Booster Club meetings in June, July and August will be held on the second Tuesday of each month instead of every Tuesday. Meetings are at noon at the Iron Horse Restaurant.

Cash, a 6-5 wing, averaged 10 points and five rebounds per game during his sophomore season. The Cougars finished fifth in the NJCAA tournament. He also shot 43 percent from 3-point range.
In Cash’s two seasons at Western Nebraska, the team had a 60-11 record.
