Valdez, Alexander Meet In Ring

Both previously have been on fight cards at the Coeur d’Alene Tribal Bingo/Casino. Tonight, they’ll fight each other.

Lightweights Steve Valdez and Paris Alexander headline the latest pro boxing card in Worley, Idaho. Boxing begins at 7:30.

The hard-nosed Valdez has fought twice in Worley, losing to Johnny Avila and defeating Raul Terrazas. Alexander, the California and Northwest champion, thundered Jose Herrera last July.

Three Spokane fighters, including the pro debut of women’s featherweight Para Draine, are on the card. Undefeated Frank Vassar and rugged Rick Welliver will be in action. Welliver lost to Tex Miles last month, but the decision was later changed to a draw by the Idaho Boxing Commission because of a scoring error.

UI announces basketball signing

Men’s basketball coach David Farrar added a third player to his 1997 recruiting class when Antonio Simpson from Los Angeles City College signed a letter of intent to play at the University of Idaho.

“His record for success speaks for itself. Not only in high school, but in junior college, his teams had tremendous success,” Farrar said.

Simpson, a 6-1 guard who was twice an all-conference selection, averaged 17 points, five assists and three steals as a freshman, and 15 points, five assists and three steals as a sophomore at L.A. City College. The Cubs were 55-12 and two-time state champions during his two seasons.

He graduated from Los Angeles’ Crenshaw High School and was a starter on the Cougars’ state championship team during his junior year.

NIC lands Tiger

Kendrick High’s Alyssa Heier has signed a letter of intent to play women’s basketball at North Idaho College.

The 5-foot-10 Heier was a starting center for the A-4 state champion Tigers. Heier has fine perimeter shooting ability and probably will play forward at NIC.

Watson cited

North Idaho College men’s basketball player Gabe Watson, son of head coach Hugh Watson, was cited for minor in possession of alcohol Saturday night, according to a police report.

Police responded to complaints about a large party attended by an estimated 150 people on South 11th Street in Coeur d’Alene. An officer spotted Watson placing two cans of beer on top of a car, according to the report.

Watson redshirted last season.
