Landslide Washes Resort Inns Away

From Staff And Wire Reports

A landslide caused by heavy rain destroyed two inns in a hot springs resort in northern Japan on Sunday, but all 51 guests and inn workers already had heeded warnings to leave the area.

A 770-yard-wide stream of mud and sand washed away the inns’ 16 buildings, said Tsukasa Kuriyama of the police station in Kazuno city, 280 miles north of Tokyo.

He said all 34 visitors and 17 workers were evacuated Saturday night.
