Gu Students Inducted Into National Honor Society

Seventeen non-traditional students at Gonzaga University have been inducted into Alpha Sigma Lambda, a national honor society.

Non-traditional students are those who are 25 or older who return to college to earn a bachelor’s degree for the first time, or to study a new discipline.

The students are:

Barbara Allen, Patricia Butte, Nancy Dionne, Mary Ely, Simeon Enemuo, S.J., Paula Foster, Heidi Gast, Kim Juarez, Jude Odiaka, S.J., Debra Price, Suzanne Rector, Aaron Rodriguez, Don Smith, Nancy Thompson, Pete Whipple, Raymond White and Nancy Wilimek.

Arvind Nerurkar, an Otis Orchards resident and a senior civil engineering student at Gonzaga University, received a $1,000 scholarship from Taylor Engineering Inc., in Spokane.

Army Private Chad Pitts, son of Rick Pitts and Karen Quaschnick, both of Spokane, graduated from One Station Unit Training at Fort Leonard Wood in Waynesville, Mo.

Air Force Airman John McClure Jr., a 1996 graduate of Medical Lake High School, graduated from the pavement and equipment maintenance apprentice course at Fort Leonard Wood in Waynesville, Mo.

Richard Jensen, a civilian employee with the Department of Defense, was named Accounting and Finance Civilian of the Year by the Air Force Financial Management and Comptrollers.

Jensen, son of Helen Jensen, Spokane, is with the 26th Accounting and Finance Squadron at Ramstein Air Base in Kaiserslautern, Germany.

Andrew Senna, a Ferris High School student, has been accepted as an international exchange student by Youth For Understanding. He will live with a family in Italy during the summer program.

Bethanie Moeller, a Ferris High School graduate, has been selected to participate in the study-abroad program of Randolph-Macon Women’s College.

Moeller, daughter of Jim and Cathie Moeller, is a sophomore at the Lynchburg (Va.) College.

She will attend the University of Reading, England, next fall.

Joy Peng, a Spokane student at Western Wyoming Community College in Rock Springs, has been named in “Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges.”

Thirteen area students attending Northwest Nazarene College in Nampa, Idaho, were named to the Dean’s List for the winter term. To earn the honor, students must maintain grade point average of at least 3.5.

The students and their home towns are:

Spokane: Ryan Fievez, Jaclyn Luhn, Casey Lund, Shayna Lund, Erika McCray, Nathan Shafer, Shawn Shafer, Jessica Menard, Mandy Boorman and Jade Ashley.

Chewelah: Debra Miller.

Cheney: Daniel Getz and Michael Alvis.

A. Larry Branen, a food science professor at the University of Idaho, was named UI’s executive director for institutional planning.

Branen is a former agriculture dean and chairman of the faculty council.

Luke Henderson, a University of Idaho senior music major and son of Mr. and Mrs. Tim Henderson of Spokane, was recently honored for academic achievement by the U of I chapter of Phi Betta Kappa, a liberal arts and science honorary.

Eligible students must be juniors or seniors who meet specific requirements for length of time as UI students and grade point average. Requirements vary for the different number of years in school.
