Local Athletes Shine At Cardinal Invite
Molly Moore’s school-record women’s hammer throw of 161 feet, 6 inches highlighted four first-place finishes for Washington State athletes Friday at the Cardinal Invitational track and field meet hosted by Stanford University.
Molly Monroe took first in the women’s javelin (142-7), Rasto Kiplangat won the men’s 800 meters (1 minute, 49.26 seconds) and Bernard Lagat took first in the men’s 1500 (3:41.19) for Washington State.
WSU also had four second-place and two third-place finishes.
The University of Idaho had three winners. Frank Bruder improved his school record in the men’s steeplechase, winning with a time of 8:34.88. Oscar Duncan won the men’s javelin, with a throw of 227 feet, 5 inches - an NCAA provisional qualifying mark and one of the 12 best in the nation this spring.
Idaho’s Tawanda Chiwira, won the women’s 400 meters in 46.72.
Gonzaga Prep graduate Justin Strand captured the men’s hammer with a throw of 222 feet, 8 inches for Stanford.
Dan O’Brien won the 110-meter hurdles (13.90) and placed second in the long jump (23-11.75).
