WSU Student Head Quits Council
The Washington State University student body president who became a city councilman has resigned the city position.
Matt Caires, whose City Council term expires at the end of the year, announced his resignation because he plans to take a summer job in Idaho, then attend graduate school in Vermont. For the past year, he has headed the WSU student body.
His mother, Leona Caires, was shot and killed in February 1996 as she taught an algebra class at a Moses Lake junior high school. The student accused of shooting her and three classmates, Barry Loukaitis, is scheduled to go on trial in August.
