Pulpit Has Surgery To Remove Bone Chip
Pulpit, fourth in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, underwent surgery Monday to remove a small bone chip from his left knee.
A statement from Claiborne Farm said trainer Frank Brothers examined Pulpit Sunday and ordered X-rays that revealed the injury.
Pulpit, a son of A.P. Indy, was the early Derby favorite but went off as the fourth betting choice at 5-1. He led the field around the clubhouse turn, down the backstretch and into the final turn before surrendering the lead to Free House with a quarter-mile remaining. Free House finished third behind Silver Charm and Captain Bodgit.
Dr. Larry Bramlage, who performed the 45-minute arthroscopic procedure, said the injury occurred during the race.
Bramlage said Pulpit’s prognosis was good.
“We anticipate him going on back to the training barn and we’re probably going to reduce his exercise for two months, and then he’ll return to training,” the veterinary surgeon said. “We always have to see how they heal.”
