Kay Bryant Receives Woman Of Year Award

Kay Bryant, human resources manager for Community Colleges of Spokane, was named Woman of the Year at the Women’s Leadership Conference sponsored by Spokane Falls Community College.

Other awards presented at the annual event went to:

Sue Bradley, librarian technician instructor, as outstanding faculty member; and Penny Butters, student services-work study placement, as outstanding staff member. Sheila Muse, immediate past-president of SFCC’s Associated Women Students Chapter, was honored as outstanding student leader; and Linda Stone, Spokane representative for the Children’s Alliance and director of the Hunger Project, received the community service award.

Spokane County Community Network awarded Gonzaga University a $7,750 grant for its Campus Kids program. The program links Gonzaga student volunteer tutors and mentors with young people in the surrounding Logan neighborhood.

In partnership with Spokane School District 81, Campus Kids recruits and trains Gonzaga students to work with children in grades four through six at Logan and Stevens elementary schools.

Christopher Elg has been named a Nationally Credentialed Law Enforcement Officer by completing a rigorous process.

In addition, Elg was rated by his peers, supervisors and community members on values and ethics, and interpersonal skills and relationships.

Travis Wineberg, a Rogers High School sophomore, won first place in the Egg Drop contest for the Science Olympiad at Gonzaga University. The competition in chemistry, physics, biology and engineering consists of 22 events.

This is the first time Rogers has qualified for the State Science Olympiad competition.

Adam Franke, a senior at Central Valley High School, recently completed an internship with Sen. Jim West at the State Capitol in Olympia. The internship allows students an opportunity to observe and experience their government at work.

Franke is the son of Paul and Colleen Franke.

John Tonani was named the 1996 Board Member of the Year at the annual meeting of Big Brothers and Sisters of Spokane.

Cheri Catt was re-elected president at that meeting, with Jim Reed, president-elect; Stan Parrish, treasurer; and Kay Cobb, secretary.

Vice-presidents are Scott McGann, program; Jack Lucas, public relations and recruitment; John Tonani, gaming; and Karen Riba, personnel and benefits.

Newly elected to the board are Diana Cote-Smith, James Hill, Christy Kerrick-Malen, Scott Millsap, Gill Moberly and Lois Osso.

Gonzaga University’s chemistry department has received two research grants.

The National Science Foundation awarded $64,000 toward the purchase of infrared spectroscopy equipment. The university provided $38,000 to complete the purchase.

David Cleary, associate professor of chemistry at Gonzaga, and Scott Jacobson, a teacher at Lake City High School in Coeur d’Alene, received a Partners in Science Award of $14,000 from the Research Corporation of Tuscon, Ariz., for their project of growing crystals to use in industry and communication.

Jan Swanson, director of North Wall Schools, received the Early Childhood Professional of the Year Award by the Eastern Washington Association for the Education of Young Children.

Swanson was recognized for her contributions of direct service to children and families as well as sharing her knowledge and abilities with her peers.

North Central High School student Tyson Baker will attend the National Youth Summit to Prevent Underage Drinking hosted by Mothers Against Drunk Driving at Washington D.C. in May. The conference which involves 400 high school students from around the country will explore issues regarding drunk driving among young people and solutions to stop underage drinking.

The summit’s goal is to build a generation of young people who will help their community leaders and local chapters of MADD on issues of teenage drunk driving.
