Hollywood’s Catchline: Will Work For Cheap Fame

Compiled By Staff Writer Dan Web

Before she was married to John Travolta, actress Kelly Preston was forced to work for food.

As well as rent money and to make her car payments, to have the occasional lunch at Spago, pay for her personal trainer and, of course, there’s always that 10 percent that goes to the agent.

Now, however, she’s free from having to do anything she doesn’t want.

“Before I was married, I had to do films that I didn’t necessarily love, or think were great,” Preston told Premiere magazine. “But that works against what you’re actually trying to do. So the greatest thing is, Johnny gave me the freedom to not have to work. And I didn’t.”

An example: Pre-Travolta Preston was perhaps best known for John Landis’ “Amazon Women on the Moon.” These days, she’s appearing in the likes of “Jerry Maguire.”

Loose talk

Aaron “Melrose Place” Spelling airing his frustration over Heather Locklear’s pregnancy (in TV Guide): “I’m going to start handing out condoms on the set.”

Don’t worry, though, it’s not an emergency

George Clooney turns 36 today.

Always remember: four dead in O-Hi-O

David Crosby, Steven Stills and Graham Nash performed at Ohio’s Kent State University on Sunday. It was the 27th anniversary of the National Guard shooting deaths of four students. The trio sang Neil Young’s anthem “Ohio.” “It’s not something that the American consciousness should forget,” said Crosby. “It’s a mistake we don’t ever want to repeat.”

One pill makes you larger, and one pill makes you small…

Speaking of the past, not everything that occurs is so clear as the Kent State Massacre. “When the Jefferson Airplane came on ‘American Bandstand’ they were quite ravaged (by drugs),” recalls Dick Clark. “Years later I asked Grace Slick, did she remember the show? She looked at me and said, ‘Dick, I don’t remember anything about the sixties.”’

Stewart to the studio: ‘Make it so’

Let it be known that a ninth “Star Trek” movie is in the works, and Patrick Stewart has signed on for another mission as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard. The movie, says executive producer Rick Berman, is planned for a November 1998 release.

Here’s a man who has no fear of fashion crime

When French fashion designer Christian Lacroix spotted one of his jackets at a Manhattan flea market recently, reports have it that he hid the garment beneath a pile of clothing. Isaac Mizrahi, facing the same situation, had a different reaction. “I took it out of the back and put it in front,” he said. “I was so excited.”

And then, of course, Hollywood took a shine to her

It wasn’t easy coming from an acting family. “When I was starting out, being a Redgrave was a bit of a double-edged sword,” says Lynn Redgrave. “The name made some people look up and take notice, but there was also a very stupid, kind of backhanded attempt to avoid any sort of favoritism.”
