Lakers Move On To Face Jazz After Knocking Blazers Out

Associated Press

The Lakers came to the Rose Garden on Friday night with their bags packed and an airplane waiting to whisk them away. The question was: Where would they land?

A victory over Portland in Game 4 of their Western Conference playoff series would put them on the redeye to Salt Lake City, where Karl Malone and the Utah Jazz are waiting for someone to give them a game.

A defeat would send them back to L.A. for an anything-can-happen Game 5 against a Portland team that appeared ready to roll over for them after losing the first two games of the series.

Someone alert the Mailman. Company’s coming.

Outplaying Portland in the fourth quarter for the fourth consecutive game, the Lakers advanced to the conference semifinals with a 95-91 victory over the Blazers in front of a Rose Garden crowd of 21,538.

The win gives the Lakers a 3-1 victory in the series, and sends them into a best-of-seven head-banger with top-seeded Utah. Game 1 is Sunday at 2:30 p.m. PDT.

After shooting just 66.4 percent from the foul line in the first three games of the series, the Lakers made 38 of 44 (86.4 percent), including 10 of 10 in the final 1:55. Elden Campbell made two of the biggest, drawing nothing but net on both with 8.5 seconds left to provide the final margin. Campbell finished the game 11 of 12 from the line, as he and Shaquille O’Neal scored 27 points each.

Jerome Kersey, who spent the first 11 years of his career with the Trail Blazers, had a huge hand in eliminating his former team. It was Kersey’s tip-in of O’Neal’s missed jumper with 1:17 to play that gave the Lakers an 87-85 lead, and forced Portland to foul in the waning moments.

The Lakers eliminated a Portland team that had beaten them three out of four times in the regular season.

“I can’t help but think that the Blazers may have made a mistake by making it so open that they wanted to play us (in the playoffs),” Laker coach Del Harris said. “It’s tough to pull on Superman’s cape, if you get my drift.”
