NHL playoffs

Martin Lapointe scored 59 seconds into overtime as the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Anaheim Mighty Ducks 2-1 Friday night in the opening game of their best-of-7 Western Conference semifinal.

Detroit was able to shut down the Ducks long enough as goalie Mike Vernon made some key saves and Sergei Fedorov scored midway through the third period to tie the game 1-1.

In overtime, Larry Murphy dug the puck out from the boards at center ice and passed across to Brendan Shanahan, sending him and Lapointe on a 2-on-1 with only Paul Kariya back. Shanahan made a hard pass to Lapointe and he fired it past Guy Hebert.
