Suspects Sought In Supermarket Robbery

From Staff Reports

Spokane police are looking for three young men who robbed a supermarket. Two of the men staged a fight in front of the store to create a diversion for the robber.

The three suspects entered a Safeway at 1617 W. Third at 9:15 p.m. Sunday, said police spokesman Dick Cottam.

Two of the suspects began to scuffle near the store entrance. While that was distracting store employees, a third man, with a red bandanna pulled over part of his face, approached a clerk, Cottam said.

The clerk told police that the suspect had a hand in his pocket and demanded money. The clerk said he hesitated, but the man indicated he had a weapon and threatened to kill him.

Cottam said the robber took the cash and ran from the store. By that time, the two men out front had already left the scene.

Store employees and an eyewitness saw the three men leave in a small, silver, four-door car fleeing south on Maple.

The robber was described as Native American or black in his early to mid-20s. He is about 6 feet 1 inches tall and weighs approximately 165 pounds. He has a scar on his face from his right ear to his jaw line.

The two other males, both about 16 or 17, were described as black, 5 feet 6 inches tall and 130 pounds.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Crime Check at 456-2233.
