The Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee has raised the $100,000 non-refundable deposit necessary to make a formal bid for the 2008 Olympic Games to the U.S. Olympic Committee. It plans to file its application today. Seattle and New York City are well ahead of the California local committee in organizing, and several other cities are considering a bid. The USOC will choose the U.S. candidate for the 2008 Summer Games in 1999.
The U.S. Tennis Association said it increased the purse at the 1997 U.S. Open 8.5 percent to $11.8 million. Singles winners in the 1997 tournament will earn $650,000, a $50,000 increase. Runners-up will earn $350,000.
