Garland Owner To Open Hayden Cinema

The owner of a Spokane discount movie house plans to open another four times bigger in Hayden.

Don Clifton, who has owned the Garland Dollar Theater at Garland and Monroe since 1987, will open the Coeur d’Alene Discount Cinema in the Prairie Shopping Center on Aug. 1.

“With four screens, it’ll give us a lot more variety of things to play,” said Clifton, adding that he hoped to play some classic movies and art films in addition to the usual array of Hollywood shows.

Clifton’s company, Reel One, also is looking for a site for a discount movie theater in the Spokane Valley and in the Lewiston/Clarkston area.

Because the movies at the theater in Hayden won’t be first-run, ticket prices will be lower. Adult prices will be $1.50 for a matinee and between $1.50 and $3 for all other shows. The exact prices haven’t been set yet, Clifton said.

“We’ll have the bottomless tub of popcorn, just like the Garland,” he said.

The Prairie Shopping Center is a 227,600-square-foot retail development going up on Prairie Avenue between U.S. Highway 95 and Government Way.

Work already is under way on a 54,000-square-foot Albertson’s supermarket and construction will begin Monday on the new movie theater, said Stephen Meyer, one of two partners in Parkwood Business Properties, which is developing the shopping center.

A Payless Drug Store also will anchor the project and there will be space for numerous smaller retail stores, Meyer said.
