Skyhawks Girls Take Fourth At Pikes Peak Soccer Tourney

The Spokane Skyhawks under-15 girls soccer team finished in fourth place after losing a 10-round shootout in the Pikes Peak Invitational Tournament Sunday at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Spokane and Kansas City Avellino tied 2-2 in regulation and went through two scoreless 10-minute overtime periods before the shootout. The Ohio state champions defeated the Dallas D’Feeters 1-0 in the title game.

Dallas, runner-up in the Texas premier championships, blanked Spokane 3-0 in Sunday morning’s semifinal round.

Basketball

The Spokane Stars 17-and-under team has a bye today after finishing first in its pool at the AAU girls national tournament at Chattanooga, Tenn.

Alison Ahser scored 14 points and Yvonne Volkman contributed 13 and grabbed 10-first half rebounds as the Stars thumped the Michigan Capitals 71-48.

The 16-and-under team lost twice, bowing to Florida 69-46 and Michigan 69-57. A.J. Ruen had 19 points for the Stars in the latter game.

The Stars dropped into the shootout tournament and will play Maryland today.

Spokane’s 18-and-under team, idle Sunday, meets Iowa today.

Baseball

Josh Sheffield’s two home runs, one a grand slam, led the Bandits to a 10-5 victory over the North Stars in AAA American Legion play at Jackson Field. Teammate Chris Schuhart matched Sheffield with three hits of his own.

Joe Chimienti went 2 for 2 for the North Stars.
